July Member Spotlight: Kirk Clayton

Tell us a little about yourself and what got you on the path to CrossFit…

After high school sports and whatnot, I kept up the ol’ push-pull-legs routine, but let cardio go by the wayside. Ramped things up after graduating college and, after a few demoralizing Murphs, I eventually stopped kidding myself about my level of fitness. Joined this gym about a year ago and haven’t looked back.

What keeps you coming back each day?

The fact that there’s so much room for improvement and being humbled day in, day out. Also, knowing that I’d look back with regret if I took it for granted.

What is your favorite at-home exercise to do?

Running

If you had to do 100 reps of one movement (not

running), what would it be?

Pull ups

What are 1-2 of your goals for 2022? Have you accomplished any of these?

Nothing specific, being objective with my actions is sort of an overarching goal of mine. Basically, doing the things that’d be positive and avoiding the things that’d be negative. Way easier said than done and can’t say I’ll ever “accomplish” it.

Favorite Lift?

I’d have to say the Olympic lifts in general. They’re definitely the most challenging/satisfying.

Least favorite Crossfit movement?

It’s a tie between burpees and DB pass throughs.

Hometown?

Rock Hill, SC

Favorite Charleston Restaurant?

Lewis BBQ

If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be?

Hunting guide/outfitter

What would you most like to tell yourself at age 13?

Squat more, bench less

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet?

At the moment, probably Andy Stumpf. I’ve been enjoying his podcast for a while now.

One thing about me people would be surprised to know?

Picked up surfing last year, which usually throws people off.

If the CFJI coaches came to your house for dinner, what would you prepare?

My world-famous overnight oats.

Give us a “Question of the Day” to use in class.

Best movie of all time?
