Tell us a little about yourself and what got you on the path to CrossFit…

I have been doing CrossFit for about five years. When I turned 30, I realized I needed to increase how much I was working out and came to enjoy CrossFit because I like lifting heavy things.

What keeps you coming back each day?

I would say the community, continued desire to lose weight and get stronger, and I feel like the gym is a small place of normalcy during these weird t...

Kelly Jakes has been a member of the CFJI family since June 2019. She has shown great determination and eagerness to learn and improve every day. Alongside her husband, Cutter Tews, Kelly has been an active member of the community, participating in last winter's Life Challenge, where she lost 4.1% body fat, and was awarded the Most Improved Award at the Annual Christmas Party. Tell us a little about yourself and what got you on the path to CrossFit and Nutrition…

My name is Steve and I live on James Island with my wife, two kids (12 and 9 years old), a dog, two cats, and a bearded dragon. In real life, I work in ocean conservation but for an hour each day I get to sweat, complain, and dominate with you all at the gym.

This CrossFit journey has been life changing. I’ve always been super active, but I’ve never been form...

You slowly stumble off from the seat, lean over so your hands rest on your knees, and with sweat dripping from your brow, you gasp for any amount of air that will enter your exhausted lungs. An all too familiar position, right? At least once a week, if not more, we all face this monostructural monster: the assault bike. Known for its ability to ramp up its resistance automatically with each increased push, pedal, and pull, makes it a deadly pie...

What are 1-2 of your goals for 2020?

Julie: Participate in the Dirty Doug workout this year so I will know I can try it before I turn 50, next year.

Josh: Handstand walk 25 feet unbroken.

If you had to do 100 reps of one movement (not running), what would it be?

Julie: Dumbbell Plank Row, I’ve only done it once in class so I’m not sure how 100 would feel...

Josh: Push Ups

What differences have you noticed since joining CFJI / tell us abou...

Tell us a little about yourself and what got you on the path to CrossFit.

I'm originally from Germany, My family moved over when BMW began building their plant up in Spartanburg.

I lived there up until I went to college at University of South Carolina in Columbia for Electrical Engineering. When I graduated I got a job down here in Charleston at an Automotive plant as a Validation Engineer.

My path to CrossFit actually started with a re-occurring...

Tell us a little about yourself and what got you on the path to CrossFit and Nutrition…

After eating and drinking my way through Australia for 9 months after undergrad, I came back to the states a tad heavier than I was when I left, so I needed something to whip me back into shape. A friend of mine was a CrossFit coach at the time, so I started doing private sessions with her, and finally she convinced me to start going to classes. I’ve bee...

What made you start in the first place?

I get nervous in groups, I’m not competitive, and I hate sweating.

Oh, and I hadn’t worked out in years. CrossFit sounded perfect for me!

Truthfully, I was in a really bad place in my life. I needed to make some drastic changes to be happy and that included taking better care of myself in lots of ways. And, I was skinny fat. When I tried CFJI, I was determined not to make excuses to never show up again. I we...

Last week we had a pre-class discussion/question about the practice of gratitude. This spawned from an excellent podcast I'd heard on the Tim Ferris Podcast concerning the importance of practicing gratitude. We followed up by asking each member of the class to express gratitude for something they had going well. Lots of good answers.

We discussed how a million things go right every day including making it to the gym, seeing family and friends, e...
